New Stellenbosch FC signing Lasse Sobiech has revealed what it was like to train under Jurgen Klopp during their shared time at Borussia Dortmund.

Lasse Sobiech joined Stellenbosch FC last month as a high-profile signing from 2. Bundesliga side SV Darmstadt and impressed on his recent debut for the club in the 1-1 draw against Cape Derby rivals Cape Town City FC.

The towering centre-back, who is a former Germany youth international, arrived in the Winelands with a wealth of experience to his name after previously enjoying spells across the top two divisions in Germany and in Belgium and Switzerland.

Sobiech credits much of his career to his time in the development of ranks of Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund where he later graduated to train with the first team, before moving on to play for the likes of FC Köln, St. Pauli, Hamburg and Greuther Fürth.

“Borussia Dortmund gave me everything,” he tells KICKOFF. “It was the most important thing for me. In Germany, if you are not in the youth team of a top club then it’s hard to make it because every player is at such a good level.

“That is especially so at Dortmund where every year we reached the finals of the youth tournaments. We had a very, very good team and great trainers.”

Chief among those trainers was head coach Jürgen Klopp, now at the helm of Premier League side Liverpool, who he reveals lived up to his reputation as a charismatic and all-energy figure in the dressing room.

“After my time with the youth, I spent two years training with the first team under Jürgen Klopp and he’s exactly like what you see on the TV, always shouting and screaming,” Sobiech adds.

“He is this loud, motivational person who is always at 110%. He’s maybe not the one for the tactical things but he’s the one who pushes everybody. As players, we had a saying that we would go through fire for him.”
